🔍 What is a Sentence?

A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It always begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!) depending on its type.

🧩 Classification of Sentences (Based on Function)

Sentences are classified into five main types based on their purpose:

1. Assertive Sentence (Declarative Sentence)

It states a fact, opinion, or idea.
👉 Structure: Subject + Verb + Object.

🔹 Example:

  • I love reading books.
  • The sun rises in the east.

2. Interrogative Sentence

It asks a question.
👉 Structure:

  • (Yes/No): Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb…?
  • (WH): WH-word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb…?

  • Are you coming today?
  • What is your name?

3. Imperative Sentence

It gives a command, request, or advice.
👉 Structure: Base Verb + Object (often subject is implied “you”).

  • Please close the door.
  • Don’t talk in the class.

4. Exclamatory Sentence

It expresses strong emotion or surprise.
👉 Structure: What/How + adjective/noun + subject + verb!

  • What a beautiful place this is!

5. Optative Sentence

It expresses wishes, blessings, or prayers.
👉 Structure: May + Subject + Verb…

  • Compound-Complex Sentence: A mix of compound and complex. (She sings and he plays when it rains.)
