What is an Auxiliary Verb?

An Auxiliary verb (also called a helping verb) is used with a main verb to form different tenses, voices, moods, or questions. It helps the main verb express time, possibility, necessity, or emphasis.

📚 Types of Auxiliary Verbs

1. Primary Auxiliary Verbs

  • Be (am, is, are, was, were)
  • Have (have, has, had)
  • Do (do, does, did)

Use: Form continuous tenses, perfect tenses, passive voice, negatives, and questions.

2. Modal Auxiliary Verbs

Express ability, permission, possibility, necessity, or obligation.

Common modals:
can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would
